The spectre of the long dead Apartheid still hangs over South Africa and Johannesburg remains a city of worrying crime rates, high numbers of HIV sufferers and racial tension... but the Rainbow Nation is much more wealthy and powerful than it once was and now holds a seat on the UN Security Council representing Africa. Viewed by some as the state which must take care of the less organised African nations and lead the way to a democratic, peaceful continent, South Africa has produced only a few costumed heroes but is still vitally important on the world stage.
